My early beginnings I was in love with drawing, riding my bike and baking. As a child, I would play alone until my Mom would sit to play Jack’s with me. Her encouragement led me to go to college.
On a blessed day, my favorite work is connecting to my audience. When I am a guest speaker and or at book-signings shaking hands, I know that I am on the right track.
I'm very lucky to be doing what I love as my profession. This job allows me to travel and meet interesting new people all the time. I hope we are able to work together soon!
A powerful assortment of colors, textures, and artistic styles illustrate this true story of how Henry “Box” Brown escaped enslavement in 1849 via a harrowing journey inside a sealed crate…His traumatic, stifling two-day journey (“Baggage”) from Virginia to Philadelphia occurs over several claustrophobic spreads. Elaborate mixed-media collages by Wood (Clap Your Hands) employ a box motif, featuring Escher-like cubes alongside folded paper and painted quilt squares. A timeline, notes, and bibliography conclude this rich retelling of Brown’s courageous escape.

This rich and intricate collection of poems chronicles the various experiences of American slaves. Drawn together through imagery drawn from quilting and fiber arts, each poem is spoken from a different perspective: a house slave, a mother losing her daughter to the auction block, a blacksmith, a slave fleeing on the Underground Railroad.
This moving and eloquent set of poems, brought to life by vivid and colorful artwork from Michele Wood, offers a timeless witness to the hardship endured by America's slaves. Each poem is supplemented by a historical note.
